This blog was created to reflect on my ETC 447 college course. These posts contain reflective writings and presentations regarding technology's effectiveness within the classroom and within the world of teaching. This blog will benefit me because it will act as a journal of understanding and growth throughout the semester. It will act as a resource throughout this course and my student teaching.

Linking Technology Resource to Being a GDC
For ABCya.com, I would use it in lower elementary grade levels 1-4th. I would not use it in Kindergarten, even though there are options for them because of their lack of knowledge about technology. I think that ABCya.com is a low risk for teachers to use when it comes to meeting strangers online or being able to misuse the website. They are just learning games that students use to further develop their skill levels. I believe that the only downfall of the website is that it has ads, but if that ever really became an issue, there are versions that can be paid for and the advertisements will go away.

Hi Ashley!
ReplyDeleteI actually used this website over the summer, when I was tutoring. I did not run into any issues with the ads, as you mentioned it is not a big issue. I also really like how the students that are using this website cannot communicate with other people on the internet. I have come across my younger and siblings speaking to strangers online through websites and games that are intended for children, however, you never know who is on the other side of the screen. This can be scary, so I think that it is important as future teachers that we use resources that we are familiar with.
Thanks for sharing!
Ashley,
ReplyDeleteI too think ABCya could be used in the lower grades. I think it could also be used in Kindergarten if they knew how to use the technology resource itself or if you really made sure how to use it, you could even model it to help their understanding. I agree that it is lows risk since there isn't really a way for them to communicate with strangers online through it however you do have to be aware of the ads that pop up and that they don't click on them or that they are age appropriate. Wouldn't want to get any viruses. Thanks so much for sharing!

Hi Ashley,
ReplyDeleteYour technology is a good resource for students to use to make learning fun. The use of games can help instill the content knowledge you as their teacher are teaching them during their lessons. Using this technology with such young students as you are suggesting, I wouldn't use this with advertisements. It is easy enough as an adult to accidentally click on an ad let alone having that responsibility put on a young student.
